How money goes to Spain: SEA and international transfer

The type of transfer determines the time and cost. [1]The CIS countries are not part of the EU and EEA.

Type of translationWhen usedExpenditureDuration
Regular SEA in eurosSender and consignee in the SEA areaEquitablely divided (SHA)Next day after the bank received the funds [1]
Instant SEASame if the banks support him.Not above normal under equal conditionsWait, 24/7. [1]
International (outside SEA)Sender outside the SEA zoneNot necessarily sharedMay increase, especially outside the EU [2]

If the transfer is from the IBAN recipient and the BIC (SWIFT) bank, it is processed automatically (STP): it is faster and cheaper [2]If a respondent bank is involved, the sender ’s bank is obliged to warn the client that he or she may take his or her own expenses [2].

Expenditure: SHA, OUR and BEN

The bank is entitled to take the transfer commission, most often a percentage of the minimum transaction amount, and for instantaneous transfers a fixed amount [4]The standard for transfers in the SEA area requires SHA [3][4]If the sender and the recipient are located in different EU States, the costs should be the same as domestic payments [2].

So before you send the mail, you should ask the sender's bank about three things: what kind of transfer will be used, who pays the expenses (and whether it is possible to collect the respondent bank) and when the money will arrive. Why does the Spanish bank ask for the origin of the funds

Banks and other sujetos obligados (obligated entities) must identify the customer by reliable documents before the start of the relationship (art. 3), know the purpose and nature of the business relationship and verify information about the customer's activities (art. 5) and monitor transactions throughout the relationship, including origen de los fondos, the origin of the funds (art. 6) [5][6]If the inspection cannot be performed, the bank does not open the relationship or conduct the transaction and, if it is not possible during the relationship, terminates it (art. 7) [5].

The Bank of Spain explains that the law does not specify the documents, so the bank is entitled to request any document showing the origin of the funds and the nature of your activities. The Bank of Spain refers to the tax declaration as an example. The requirements apply to existing customers. If the documents are not provided, the bank may freeze the account, but the Bank of Spain believes that it is obliged to notify the client and the bank of Spain. explain the reasons [6].

In practice, the documents usually confirm the particular source: sale of property, income, inheritance, gift, examples, not official list, and agree on the bank's recruitment before sending a large sum.

Can the bank delay or block the transfer

The Bank of Spain describes a case where the transfer was performed and written off from the sender but the recipient does not see it; the Bank has the right to freeze funds before verifying the identity of the participants and obtaining documents confirming the connection between the money and the customer ’s activities. [7]What to do: request in writing a list of documents and a time frame for verification from the bank.

Cash: declaration of 10,000 I

The law requires a prior declaration of the amount of 10,000 y or the equivalent in currency for the import into or removal from Spain of cash and related items (push checks, prepaid cards without a reference to the account). [5]The declaration must be complete and reliable, incomplete data must be equated with non-compliance [5]I'm going to go to the police station. How much cash can you bring to Spain?.

EU sanctions: what is known from official sources

EU measures related to the Russian war against Ukraine include the removal of individual Russian banks from SWIFT, the prohibition of a number of financial transactions and the prohibition of receiving deposits [9]These measures are binding in Spain (art. 42 Ley 10/2010) [5]The list of banks and transactions is being changed by the sanctions packages, so check the official pages of the European Commission and the EU Council on the date of dispatch.

The Commission explains several matters of importance to individuals: the acceptance of deposits from Russian citizens, natural persons residing in Russia and Russian legal persons is prohibited if the total amount of deposits per bank is more than 100,000 .Exception: citizens of EU States, EEA and Switzerland and persons with temporary or permanent residence permits in these countries. 5b(2)) the Commission states that holders of a long-term D visa who have completed registration at their place of residence are generally considered to be legally resident and subject to the deletion of article 5b(3) [8]As in the case of deposits, the explanations we have found do not explicitly state: the exception for deposits is given to EU citizens, EEA and Switzerland and to persons with residence permits, so clarify your case with the bank. The Commission also writes that, in the absence of lists and payments for trade, the bank has no reason to limit the account because of Russian citizenship. [8]The Code of Clarification was updated on 30 September 2026 and applies by analogy to Regulation 765/2006 (Belarus) [8].

The law prohibits conscious participation in actions whose purpose or effect is to circumvent prohibitions, we do not discuss and recommend the means of circumvention, and if your case is at risk, we need a sanction lawyer.

Typical problems in the transfer to Spain

  • Transfers are not made or delayed due to inspection: the bank is entitled to freeze the amount until documents are received [7].
  • Wrong IBAN or BIC: Automatic processing only works when correct requisitions are used, otherwise wait for manual processing [2].
  • Less than sent: costs could have been borne by the recipient or intermediary (BEN, correspondence fees) [2][3].
  • Large amount of undocumented: the bank is not obliged to conduct the transaction if it cannot apply the control measures [5].
  • The balance of the account is over 100,000 for a Russian citizen without a residence permit in the EU, EEA or Switzerland: new admissions may be prohibited [8].
  • Cash inflow without declaration: with a sum of 10,000 I am required [5].

When Individual Review Is Needed

The calm order for a big translation looks like this.

  1. Ask your Spanish bank in advance what documents he wants to see by origin of funds. [6].
  2. Clarify the sender's bank for the type of transfer, the person paying the expenses (SHA, OUR or BEN) and the possible collection of the respondent bank [2][3].
  3. Check the IBAN recipient and BIC bank: with correct props, the translation is automatic. [2].
  4. If the money is late, ask the bank for a list of documents and a deadline for verification. [7].
  5. To confirm the funds for the residence permit, check the requirements of the selected basis: Do you need a residence in Spain account?, No lucrativa route sheet.

The resolution is needed for large sums, for change of status (visa, residence permit, tax residence), for mixed sources, for real estate transactions and for any sanctions issue. Resident and non-resident taxes, modelo 720.
